Men's Gold Chains: Why Solid, Not Plated

At Gold Shield, all of our men's chains are solid karat gold in 10k, 14k, or 18k. We don't sell gold plated, gold filled, vermeil, or hollow chains. The difference is huge: a gold plated chain loses its color in 6-12 months with sweat and perfume; a hollow chain crushes, breaks at the clasp, and has no resale value. Solid gold is an investment, not an expense: it holds its value per gram, gets passed down, and can be melted or traded.

      Glossary of Men's Chain Styles

      Curb

Flat interlocking links, the Mexican classic. Versatile, works with a dress shirt, a tee, or a blazer. It's our best-seller (14k Unisex Curb Chain $2,499). Choose Curb if you want one chain for everything.

      Cuban Link

A solid curb-type link but thicker, polished, and compact. Urban aesthetic, a statement piece. It weighs more per cm, which is why the price goes up. Ideal in 4-8mm to look intentional.

      Figaro

A pattern of 3 short links + 1 long link. Classic Italian, elegant without being flashy. Works very well with a pendant because the long link naturally centers it.

      Rope

Braided links that mimic a cord. It reflects light from every angle, which is why it looks thicker than it weighs. Excellent shine-to-weight ratio.

      Mariner

Oval links with a bar across the center, inspired by anchor chain. Nautical, masculine, and clean look. Very popular in yellow 14k.

      Box

Compact square links. Slim profile but very strong. Ideal for carrying a heavy pendant without the chain deforming.

      Diamond-Cut Curb

A variant of the Curb with a diamond cut on each link for maximum shine. It looks more expensive than it costs.

Which Width (mm) to Choose Based on Your Build

      • Slim / youthful: 2-3 mm. Discreet, everyday, under a shirt.
      • Average / athletic: 4-5 mm. The sweet spot, visible with an open tee without shouting.
      • Robust / statement: 6 mm or more. Looks intentional, requires a wide neck to be proportional.

10k vs 14k vs 18k: Which to Choose

      • 10k gold (41.7% gold): The hardest and most scratch-resistant. Paler yellow color. Ideal for rough daily wear (work, gym, kids).
      • 14k gold (58.5% gold): The perfect balance of color, durability, and price. The jewelry standard in Mexico and the USA. We recommend it by default.
      • 18k gold (75% gold): Deep yellow color, prestige. Softer, better for occasions and pieces not worn daily.

      European Quality, Mexican Price

We run our own workshop in Mexico City with master jewelers trained in Italian and Spanish schools. That lets us offer finishing, soldering, and clasps at the level of European brands without the import premium, without tariffs or middlemen. The same chain at Liverpool or from an importer on Etsy costs you 40-80% more for the branding, not for the gold.

      Gold Shield Certification

Every chain is delivered with a signed certification card that specifies: exact weight in grams, karat (with acid or XRF testing available in store), style, width, and length.. This certification is what lets you resell it, insure it, or pass it down as an heirloom with documented backing.

      Pair It with a Pendant

Any chain can be paired with a pendant of the same karat: cross, Virgin, Saint Jude, initials, personalized plate, or medal. We always recommend the same gold to avoid color difference and uneven wear.

Frequently Asked Questions — Men's Gold Chains

Is it solid or plated gold? How do I verify the karat?
All of our men's chains are solid karat gold in 10k, 14k, or 18k. We never sell plated, gold filled, or hollow. Each piece comes stamped with the karat hallmark (10K, 14K, or 18K) on the clasp or last link, plus a signed Gold Shield certification card with weight in grams and karat. If you want additional verification, at our Mexico City store we do acid testing or XRF reading at no cost. You're covered by the 6-month Gold Shield warranty against soldering or factory defects.
What's the real difference between 10k, 14k, and 18k for daily wear?
The number indicates purity: 10k is 41.7% gold, 14k is 58.5%, and 18k is 75%. For rough daily wear (physical work, gym, contact with chemicals) 10k is the hardest and most scratch-resistant. 14k is our default recommendation: the perfect balance between intense yellow color, durability, and price, it's the jewelry standard in Mexico. 18k has a deeper yellow color and prestige, but is softer: ideal for occasions or pieces you don't wear every day.
What chain length should I order? How do I measure my size?
Standard men's lengths: 50 cm sits at the collarbone (closed with a shirt), 55 cm sits 2-3 fingers below (versatile with a tee), 60 cm falls mid-chest (visible with a V-neck), 65-70 cm is a long statement length for hanging a large pendant. To measure yourself, take a flexible cord, pass it around your neck to where you want the chain to fall, mark it, and measure with a ruler. If in doubt, order 55 cm: it's the most requested size by adult Mexican men.
Do Gold Shield chains have a clasp or safety lock?
Yes, all of our men's chains include a safety clasp in gold of the same karat (never steel or plating). For 2-4 mm widths we use a lobster or reinforced spring clasp; for 5 mm chains and up we set a box clasp with a double safety tongue (Cuban style) that prevents accidental openings. If you prefer a specific box or screw clasp, we solder it at no extra cost when you confirm your order. The clasp is counted within the total specified length.
Can I change the length if it's too small or too large?
Yes. Shortening your chain costs only the labor (approximately $250-400 MXN) and is delivered in 3-5 business days. To lengthen it we add links of the same gold and width, charging the extra grams at the day's price plus labor. If the piece is less than 30 days from purchase, the first size adjustment is free. We receive your chain by courier with a prepaid Gold Shield label from anywhere in Mexico.
