EXPERT GUIDE · NATURAL GEMSTONES

How to identify an authentic sapphire in 2026

7 professional methods + real prices in Mexico

Buying an authentic natural sapphire in Mexico can be intimidating. The market is full of synthetics, doublets and colored glass that pass themselves off as real sapphires. In this guide you'll learn the 7 methods that professional gemologists use to identify a natural sapphire, what prices are realistic in Mexico, and how to avoid scams when buying online.

What is a natural sapphire?

The sapphire is the blue (and other colors) variety of the mineral corundum (Al₂O₃), the same mineral as the ruby. It has a hardness of 9 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond. Although most people think of blue, sapphires exist in almost every color: pink, yellow, green, orange, white and even multicolor (parti sapphires).

The 7 methods to identify an authentic sapphire

1. Hardness test (Mohs 9)

An authentic sapphire scratches glass, quartz and most gemstones. Only diamond and other corundum can scratch it. If your "sapphire" gets scratched with a fingernail, a coin or a common knife, it's almost certainly glass.

2. Inclusions under 10x loupe

Natural sapphires have internal inclusions: rutile needles ("silk" effect), small crystals, growth lines. If your sapphire looks "perfect" under magnification, it's very likely synthetic.

3. Light reflection and dispersion

Fake sapphires (glass) reflect light with a brilliance that's too uniform. A natural sapphire has a distinctive vitreous luster that changes subtly as you move it.

4. Air bubbles (suspicious)

If under a loupe you see round, spherical bubbles inside the stone, it's molten glass or resin. Natural sapphires never contain perfect spherical bubbles.

5. Breath test

Blow warm air over the sapphire. If it fogs up like a mirror and takes more than 3 seconds to clear, it's probably glass. A natural sapphire clears almost immediately.

6. Pleochroism (angles)

Move the sapphire under natural light. A natural sapphire shows slight variations in tone (lighter/darker) depending on the angle. Synthetics have uniform color from any view.

7. Laboratory certification

The definitive way is to request a certificate from a recognized laboratory: GIA, GRS, Gübelin, SSEF or AGTA. In Mexico, Versatto and others offer certification. For sapphires over $10,000 MXN, the cost of the certificate is always worth it.

Unheated vs heated sapphires

90-95% of the sapphires on the market are heated to 1,200-1,800°C to improve color and clarity. This treatment is accepted by the industry, but unheated ("unheated" or "no heat") sapphires are significantly more valuable.

  • Heated sapphire 1ct jewelry quality: $3,000–$8,000 MXN
  • Unheated sapphire 1ct jewelry quality: $8,000–$25,000 MXN (3x more)
  • Premium unheated sapphire (Kashmir, Burma): $50,000+ MXN/ct

Premium sapphire origins: Which is worth more?

  • Kashmir (India): The rarest and most expensive. Unique "cornflower blue" color. Mines almost depleted. Price: up to $200,000 USD/ct.
  • Burma (Myanmar): Historical tradition. Deep "royal blue" color. Even rarer than Madagascar.
  • Sri Lanka (Ceylon): Varied colors, excellent clarity. A highly in-demand origin.
  • Madagascar: Excellent value for money. Market maturity since the 90s.
  • Australia: Greens, dark blues and "partis" (multicolor). Eco-friendly (responsible mining).
  • Thailand: Usually heated. Darker tones, "ink blue".

How to buy sapphires online without scams?

  1. Buy only from reputable stores (verified sites, track record, real reviews)
  2. Ask for a high-resolution photo under natural and artificial light
  3. Verify the declared origin with specific questions (which mine? when was it extracted?)
  4. Request a certificate for sapphires >$10,000 MXN
  5. Be wary of "very low" prices — if it seems too good, it is
  6. Return policy of at least 14 days
  7. Integrated setting service = professional seller, not a casual reseller

⚡ Buy natural sapphires with a guarantee
